Feel Like the Universe is Working Against You?

This feeling is normal, and we all experience it. As humans we are taught, we are hardwired, that struggle is necessary in a world of finite resources.

The reality of our world is different, and hard to perceive when we are in the nitty gritty.

The other day I was feeling like the Universe had abandoned me. I did not have the faith that things would work out. My old fear of lack surfaced as I worried how my wife and I would pay our bills, how we would have enough to take care of our family and ourselves.

I decided that I needed to dig deep inside myself to understand what was going on. I read the first chapter of Gabrielle Bernstein’s book, The Universe Has Your Back. She quoted A Course In Miracles (ACIM) “the presence of fear is a sure sign you are trusting in your own strength.” ACIM is a universal spiritual text, channeled by Helen Schucman in the 1970’s.

Because I am a student of ACIM, Gabby’s quote brought me to my current reading, which essentially said: when you feel bad or in conflict about a situation, you have made a decision involving idols (materiality), and have not asked for the divine, pure knowledge that is yours.

What this means to me is that when I am trying to control the process, worrying about material things, judging, I am not moving with the Universe. I am swimming upstream, struggling. The first indicator of this is when we feel conflict or distress.

I also came to realize that when we let go of control, and recognize the interrelationships of events in our lives, we can see the universe working for us.

If we can surrender to what comes naturally, with love instead of judgement, we can leave conflict behind. Quiet your mind and look to your inner voice for direction and peace. Instead of swimming upstream, we can float with the energy of the universe, like a lazy river.
