Rewriting Your Money Story

Our cultural programming would have you think that is all about the money. In “Scarface,” Al Pacino’s Tony Montana says “In this country, you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women.” This quote may make you smile or cringe, but it is an example of the powerful cultural programming we have all been subject to.

If you believe money is the foundation of happiness and fulfillment, you will always be chasing it.

If you believe money is the foundation of happiness and fulfillment, you will always be chasing it. Abundance is not experienced when we are in this way of thinking. When we are chasing money, we feel the opposite – we feel lack because we are always needing more.

I speak from experience. I was once in the mindset of never enough, trying to get and keep as much money as I could. I bought the whole cultural narrative enchilada around material things - new car, house, and clothes - I was an upwardly mobile hamster on a wheel!😬 I counted every penny (no joke). I scrutinized bills, critically eyeing expenses like food and clothing (“do you really need new shoes?”). I was really a jerk, in conflict all the time, stressing my family. I thought it had to be that way. Good news here, folks, it doesn’t!

What is your money story?

I wonder if maybe you can see some of yourself in who I was? Do you have a partner? Are you ever at odds around spending money?

Do you have a partner? Are you ever at odds around spending money?

WE GET TO CHOOSE HOW WE THINK! We can reframe or rewire our thinking. One simple example for me was when I came to appreciate the chipped, broken formica counter in our 1970’s kitchen. I resented it for years believing it was indicative of all we deserved but couldn’t afford. I came to realize that while it wasn’t granite, it was a counter that served all the purposes we needed. A granite counter would not have made us any happier.

Only you can do this, only you can rewrite your story. We change our perception from lack and scarcity to abundance. It does not happen with the snap of the fingers but happens over time with work. Meditation, affirmations, and other self-work are part of rewiring to a life of peace and ease. I have reached this point (most of the time 😊), and I hope my words can help you get there.
